The best kids birthday party ideas make for the best parties. And the best parties are truly one of the highlights of childhood!

Kids Birthday Party Ideas for Summer

Will this be a summer birthday? You’re one of the lucky-duckies (sorry, don’t know where that came from) who have the option of hosting an outdoor birthday party.

You get to play all the “wet games” and games requiring supplies that you wouldn’t want to meet up with your carpet or furniture, such as:

  • Egg toss
  • Water balloon toss
  • Marco Polo – if you happen to have a swimming pool
  • Gator – another “tag” like game for the swimming pool
  • Olympics – I set up a fun obstacle course in the backyard one year and the kids didn’t want to stop playing! I kept hearing, “Best 2 out of 3…!”

How about Summer Birthday Themes to Tie In with your Party Games?

  • Tie-dye Theme (aka: a retro 60s theme)
  • Sports Theme: baseball, football, soccer, racing
  • Reality Show Themes: Lost, Survivor…

Gotta have a…Bar-b-que! Of all the seasons this is the only one wherein one can fire up the birthday party by firing up the grill.

Why not make it a theme? A Bar-b-que Birthday! (you saw it here first on BirthdayHub.com 😉

How about getting some of those nifty grilling bags, lay out a variety of veggies (cherry tomatoes, onions, carrots, peppers, etc) and meats such as chicken and/or beef. Allow each child to fill their bags with their choice of edible chunks.

If you’re brave and the birthday revelers are 10 and up shish-kabobs would be fun for them to assemble as well. We all like choices; give your birthday guests a choice of either stuffing a grilling bag or skewering their own veggies and beef.

Chunks of cool wet fruit make fun and healthy shish-kabobs, too.

WARNING: Supervision is recommended wherever we have a combination of boys and pointy weapon-like objects.

Kids Birthday Party Ideas For Fall

Fall BirthdayParty Ideas

Fall is my absolute favorite time of year! This is the most colorful cozy time of year where you may get lucky and have a beautiful fall day orrr maybe not. Best to have back-up indoor games planned if your birthday boy or girl requests a few outdoor activities.

Let’s start you off with a few fun fall games:

  • Chopstick Pass-Along
  • Autumn obstacle course – use hay bales to jump or climb over or through, pumpkins to run around, leaf garlands to crawl under…
  • Pass the Apple for Tweens to adults: this game involves tucking an apple between the chin and shoulder, racing to your partner a few feet away (depending on available space) then passing the apple to your partner’s awaiting chin/shoulder
  • Cake walks are always a winner!
  • Hot Apple (or squash or gourd) for ages 2 to 102 – just like hot potato only…fall-ish
  • Bobbing for apples – unless you cringe at the threat of germs in which case you can play
  • Apple Grab – hang an apple by a string; participant must attempt to grab the apple using only his teeth.

Fall Birthday Theme Ideas

As always, themes will depend on the birthday guy’s or gal’s current interest but if you’d like to make it a fall theme (after all you’re the one running the show), here are some festive fall themes:

  • Old McDonald Had a Farm theme
  • Harvest Theme
  • Scarecrow Theme – may be tied in with a “Wizard of Oz” theme
  • Spooky theme if on or near Halloween
  • Peanuts, “Charlie Brown’s – The Great Pumpkin” theme
  • Football or other sport theme that kicks off in the fall
  • Parade theme
  • Homecoming theme
  • Thanksgiving theme if on or near this holiday
  • Back-to-School theme
  • Costume Party Theme

Kids Birthday Party Ideas: Fall Eats ‘n Treats

A bar-b-que in the fall is still a safe bet. How about some . . .

  • Chili
  • Cornbread muffins
  • Apple cider
  • Caramel apples
  • Rice Krispie Treats

Kids Birthday Party Ideas for Winter

Perhaps you have a “cool” winter birthday to plan. In most cases party games will move indoors, unless . . . Nature provides a snow fall!

Tweens and teens may be up for a good old-fashioned snow-ball fight! Girls against boys or divide kids into 2 teams.

May I recommend choosing teams by having each snowball heaving guest number off, so as to spare those delicate self-esteems (speaking from experience here).

Some game ideas for your Winter party can include:

  • North Pole Freeze Dance – kids “dance” on floor covered in white balloons and must freeze when the wintery music (such as the Nutcracker Suite) you are playing, stops. They absolutely love kicking the “snow” balloons around.
  • Snowball hot potato – use either a large-ish styrofoam ball or white bean bag for the “potato.”
  • Penguin relay – guests must run or walk with a white balloon between their legs passing the balloon to his teammates knees.
  • A gingerbread housebuilding contest would be fun, too.

Wintry Birthday Theme Ideas

If your birthday honoree doesn’t come up with a theme here are some great ideas…

  • Christmas Theme if on or near Christmas
  • North Pole Theme
  • Winter Wonderland Theme
  • Nascar Racing Theme – (races begin in February)
  • New Years Theme
  • Ice Hockey, Ice Skating, snow skiing…

Kids Birthday Party Ideas: Winter Eats ‘n Treats

  • All white veggies & cheese tray with white ranch dressing dip
  • Make your own snowballs by rolling ice-cream into a ball. Roll each ice-cream ball in coconut or white sprinkles.
  • Make varying sizes of popcorn balls with which kids can make popcorn snowmen. This can be done using marshmallows as well.
  • Snowflake shaped sugar cookies can be made the night before for some fun decorating time. Have frosting and sprinkles at the ready.

Kids Spring Birthday Party Ideas

Kids Birthday Party Pinata

A Spring time Birthday! The days get so much brighter and the weather delightfully warmer. Let’s start with party games to put a spring in the party-goers step.

  • Pinatas may find their origin in the beautiful Chinese culture before passing to the Spanish, but they are now a traditional element of birthday parties everywhere. Find one that ties in with your birthday theme.
  • Red Rover
  • Pass the Sand (also great for a beach party) – The first person in two lines grabs a handful of sand then passes it to the next person. The last player in line then pours whatever sand is left into a bowl or beach bucket. The team with the most sand in their bucket after 2 or 3 minutes wins! The timing will depend upon the number of participants which should be 4 or more.
  • Let’s make it easy; how about just having the party at a nearby park and let the birthday gang cut loose!

Spring Birthday Themes

  • Butterflies and Bugs themes
  • Garden Party theme
  • Baby Animals theme
  • St. Patricks Day theme
  • Easter theme

Spring Birthday Game Ideas

Kids birthday party ideas for Spring are no fun without games! Here are a few fun ideas:

  • Easter Egg Hunt – or other spring-related-object hunt
  • Bubble making contest – who can make the biggest bubble? Visit the recipe for bubbles page for recipes and other fun bubble ideas.
  • Paper Airplane Race – make or show kids how to make paper airplanes. Be sure to weigh down each with a paper clip on the nose (of the paper airplane). Each child, while standing behind a line gives their airplane a toss, whose ever goes the farthest wins the best pilot trophy.
  • For Teens it’s fun to write the name of a current pop star on a sticky note, stick the note on their forehead and go around asking only yes or no questions to discover who they are. The first to guess is the winner (has nothing to do with spring but, hey, what a great idea for our beloved teens, huh?)

Kids Birthday Party Ideas: Spring Eats ‘n Treats

You’ve just dusted the cob-webs off your bar-b-que, yes? Then let’s have a spring bar-b-que!

Or…

How about treating your birthday guests to a picnic? Tell ya what, make it easy on yourself – In your invitations let parents know you will be treating your birthday guests to a picnic asking that they pack a lunch for their Sweety-Pies.

Believe me, the parents will think it a fair trade for the nice little break you’re providing them for the afternoon 😉
